Calving 2018…
19/03/2018
Our first calf was born on Saturday (17th March) at about 6:30pm. Saturday here was really cold, snow in the air, 30 mph winds. Lucky for us, the cow decided to come to the barn early on in the process, so we kept her inside to calve. It took her a few hours, but she managed to do it unaided (thankfully). We were on the point of stepping in, but decided to walk away for a cuppa and 30 minutes later… there was the calf. Now, 2 days on and she’s out on our remaining un-used grass and loving today’s sunshine… Welcome to Beatrice…
Today (Monday, 19th March) and number two has arrived. This time out in the sunshine, again without any help from us and all done in 2 hours. The remaining 2 in-calf cows were very interested in the new calf… Welcome to Becky…
We managed to get this new heifer onto the scales today as well… 48Kg.

26/03/2018 at 1:54 pmThey certainly are. The nice thing about these 2 heifers is that they are joining the breeding herd, so they will be with us for some years to come.
We are still waiting for the last 2 cows to calve…must be any day now!
