The final lambing…..
07/07/2024
With a mixture of regret and joy we have decided to sell our flock of sheep and to focus on the cattle instead. Despite the advantages of having the sheep here – ie they eat the bits of grass the cows won’t, and the pleasure in seeing the lambs grow and play in the fields, the level of work involved became too much with just the two of us. What a steep learning curve it has been…..laughter and tears.
So this year’s lambing was our last…….we have had so many highs and lows in the last few years with the lambing and we will miss it (a bit!) Just a few of the photos:
The lambing shed full of expectant ewes
A bottle rack – just the best invention ever!
Our only set of quads – she managed to feed these herself (with a bit of a bottle top up for the smallest two!)
These two lost their mum, she was found dead in the field when they were a few days old. The heat lamp was a life saver.
The adopter pen – the poor ewe has been in the pen for 4 days with this lamb and it finally seems as though she has accepted it as her own. She was let out into the fields with the rest of the flock that afternoon – not soon enough judging by her expression!
Just the best mum ever, she always had triplets, never fussed over them but knew exactly where they were in the field and always fed them well with no problems. Every evening they would gather round her to sleep even when they were almost as big as she was!
He always knew how to pose for the camera!
An empty shed after a few frenetic weeks!!
We will probably buy some store sheep in just to fatten them up late spring, they will then eat down the docks etc… and we will sell them on.
