Winter housing

For the first time since we have been here we have had to make the decision to bring some of the cows inside due to the waterlogged fields.  Like most of the UK we have had a tremendous amount of rain over a long period and a lot of our fields are covered in standing water.  Although the cows get most of their nutrients from the haylage we feed them, they also continue grazing and in the process the fields become pouched which damages the grass (particularly around the feed ring!)  We are hoping to move them back out soon – as the Red Devons are a hardy breed and thrive outside….
